Ten years ago the word “Internet” ment nothing to me. I had no idea of the opportunities it gave, and no clue what so ever of the whole different world it represented, because it is indeed a new and exciting new world.
The Internet (International Network) enables people all over the world to share or exchange pieces of information. Nowadays it is probably the fastest and simplest way of becoming acquainted with almost any field. The Internet gives you access to any kind of information you need.
However, that is only a small part of what the Internet stands for. Its many sites are each designed so as to enable the users to perform any kind of everyday life’s activity. One can “go” shopping on the Internet – there is a large range of offers, from cars, computers and high tech to frying pans, through clothes and expensive perfumes –; also he or she can spend hours in the virtual library – you can read any kind of literature you want, in almost any language ever spoken on the face of Earth, you can read magazines, newspapers, scrapbooks, manuals, scientific books, fashion magazines, computer magazines, etc.
Nonetheless, one of the most important things about the Internet is that it offers its users the possibility of meeting. People who would never dream of meeting find each other on the Internet. They make friends from all over the world, they get to know things they otherwise would not have had access to. In a way one could say that the Internet is, among other things, a way of making cultural exchanges. Making friends of a different culture, raise, colour or religion is one of the most important ways of having contact with a different culture, of broadening your perspective on life. Studying about a different culture is great, but it only gives you the theoretical insight of that culture.
