From a psychological point of view a lie is an attempt of trying to solve two conflict situations for your own benefit. From a Christian and moral point of view a lie is a sin, something which is condemned by society and church.
However most people usually tell a lot of lies and most of the time they think this is necessary and don’t fill to guilty about this. They claim that certain circumstances didn’t offer them any other possibility but that of hiding the truth and may be right only when it is about superficial conversations about cloths, looks or some possessions. I consider it’s useless to say to a person who has just come out of the hair dresser that she looks horrible especially if she is so delighted with her new hair style. Anyway who are you to decide which appearance is best for one person? Again when people are proud of their cloths, houses and cars I think you should say something nice about them. If you don’t like their belongings and tell them the truth in an abrupt way nobody wins anything. You just create a tensioned atmosphere and spoil the other persons’ day.
On the other hand you should draw a clear line between this social “white lies” and moments when you are asked for an honest opinion. If your friends really want and advice about what should do in a certain moment of their life, you must tell them what you really think. It is not also advisable to refrain from telling what you think because this will leave the impression that you don’t want to get involved. More than these, in time you can be considered a person without personality who can’t make their own judgements about what happens around them.
The last thing that I want to mention is the lies that people tell in order to get some benefits. In my case I tell lies to my parents to get more freedom and more money, to my teachers, to avoid getting bad marks or being punished, to my boyfriend not to give him the impression that I’m addicted to him. I know that what I do is wrong that I shouldn’t avoid the consequences of my actions but for the moment this way is easier and I don’t think I cross a line.
